RICKY
HATTON has spoken about an amazing return to the ring – but will only glove up
again if the price is right.
The
former two-weight world champion has got the boxing community talking again
after getting into his best shape since last fighting in 2009.
The
Hitman has embarked on a strict diet and training programme in recent weeks,
resulting in a massive loss of weight.
One
former opponent – American big mouth Paulie Malignaggi – has already thrown his
name into the ring, saying he wants to be Hatton’s first opponent.
Hatton
has apparently spoken with those close to him about the possibility of a
comeback.
He said
it would take mega money to convince him to fight for the first time since his
huge second-round KO by Manny Pacquiao in 2009.
I
really think boxing hasn’t been the same since he “retired” after that fight.
He then had big depression, alcohol and drug problems before officially
announcing his retirement last year.
Hatton
was a world champion at light-welterweight and welterweight, and in his prime,
money-making days he earned more than £10m when he fought Floyd Mayweather Jr
in Las Vegas five years ago.
That
clash, and his bout with Pacquiao, was among the biggest grossing fights in the
history of the sport.
As much
as I am a Hatton fan I really think it’s a bad idea for him to even consider
it. He’s made his money, he’s got his health and I really think he made the
right decision at the right time when he hung his gloves up.
He is
only 33 and I have no doubt he would still be very exciting to watch. But I
think he’s had his day – and what a great day that was.
There
are so many fighters say they are going to retire and don’t, or just go on too
long. The prime example is my favourite fighter – 43-year-old Roy Jones Junior.
Even though he’s won his last two he’s just not the same after getting KOd a
few times. If Hatton does end up blowing the dust off those gloves I really do
wish him well but I hope he leaves them hanging up.
