Tonight’s fight between former WBO super featherweight
champion Adrien Broner and Vincente Escobedo is now on according to news
reports from Steven Kim. They sweetened the deal for Escobedo, who now will be
making twice the original $150,000 purse that he was given initially, in addition
to the $30,000 he got when Broner failed to make weight during Friday’s
weigh-in.
Broner, for his part, is already rehydrated up to 148 pounds
after failing to make the 140 pound rehydration weigh-in earlier this morning.
Broner could very well come in over 150 lbs for tonight’s fight, but it’s not a
big deal because it’s his last fight at super featherweight and he’s already
been stripped of his title after failing to make weight yesterday. Sure, Broner
will have a weight advantage over Escobedo but it’s not going to be a big deal
because Escobedo is being well paid to take the fight. Escobedo wasn’t going to
win the fight anyway, so it’s neither here nor there what weight Broner comes
in tonight.
It was going to be a slaughter before and it’s still going to be a
slaughter with Broner destroying Escobedo tonight. Escobedo’s manager did a
good job of getting every last penny for his fighter with Broner missing the
weigh-ins. It’s all good. Escobedo could have said no to the fight if he wanted
to, but of course if he did that I wouldn’t like his chances of ever having one
of his fights televised by HBO again. I could be wrong about this, but I don’t
think HBO would take kindly to being left and high and dry by Escobedo.
